Voluntary Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement

Tar.fyi is operated by the Materials Journalism Foundation. Tar.fyi is an online information website about tar, pitch, resinous materials, traditional materials, and related subjects.

We are not currently required to publish a modern slavery statement under Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015. We publish this voluntary statement because we believe that organisations, including small information projects, should be clear about how they operate and should avoid contributing to exploitation wherever reasonably possible.

Tar.fyi has no employees, only volunteers. It does not manufacture goods, operate physical premises for production, sell physical products, or maintain a complex supply chain. Its work is limited to publishing and maintaining informational material online.

Because of this, our direct modern slavery risk is very low. The main areas where a risk could theoretically arise are indirect services used to operate the website, such as web hosting, domain registration, software, analytics, security tools, email, and other digital infrastructure.

We aim to use reputable service providers and avoid suppliers where there is a clear reason to believe they are involved in forced labour, human trafficking, debt bondage, child labour, or other forms of exploitation. Where possible, we prefer established providers with their own published policies, compliance systems, and accountability processes.

Tar.fyi does not knowingly work with any supplier, contractor, or organisation involved in modern slavery or human trafficking. If we became aware of credible evidence that a supplier or service provider was involved in modern slavery, we would review the relationship and take appropriate action. Depending on the circumstances, this could include seeking clarification, changing provider, suspending the relationship, or reporting concerns to the relevant authorities.

As Tar.fyi grows, we will keep this statement under review. If the project begins using paid contractors, commissioning regular work, selling physical goods, using fulfilment services, accepting advertising, or operating a more complex supply chain, we will review our risks and update this statement accordingly.

The Materials Journalism Foundation expects any person or organisation working with Tar.fyi to act lawfully, treat people fairly, and avoid exploitative labour practices. We do not tolerate forced labour, human trafficking, servitude, coercion, or deceptive recruitment.

This statement applies to Tar.fyi and the work carried out through the site.
