Information about Tar

Many tars soften when heated and can become more fluid, but tar does not have one simple melting point. Heat behaviour varies widely by type and formulation.

Tar is often described as melting because it becomes softer, stickier, or runnier in heat. Anyone who has seen sticky black marks on a hot road understands the idea. But technically, tar is a mixture. It may soften over a range of temperatures rather than changing cleanly from solid to liquid at one point.

Wood tar, coal-tar pitch, bitumen, roofing products, and road materials all respond to heat differently. Some are already liquid at ordinary temperatures. Some are semi-solid. Some need warming to apply. Some modern products include solvents or modifiers that change how they soften and set.

This is why pitch is often discussed beside tar. Pitch is usually thicker and more solid, while tar is usually more fluid, but the boundary between them can blur in historical language. Heating can move a material along that spectrum temporarily.

The practical answer is that tar can soften or flow with heat, but heating tar should not be improvised. Hot tar can burn skin, catch fire, release fumes, and damage surfaces. Product instructions matter.
