Many historic buildings contain exposed timber that was never meant to be clean, pale, or sealed under modern plastic coatings. In forested and maritime regions, tar was one of the practical finishes used to protect wooden cladding, doors, outbuildings, fences, and structural pieces.
Tar helps by slowing water entry and reducing surface weathering. It can also suit old timber because it remains somewhat flexible and maintainable. A weathered tar layer can be refreshed, unlike some modern coatings that fail as sheets and trap damp beneath them.
